Apart from the entire Steel industry being on the verge of bankruptcy ... China is doing great!

There are a few different recent key pivot points for the broad market, the intra-day high on September 18th being the most obvious one – but we'll look at October's month-to-date (MTD) data for this quick screen.

The Materials sector ranks seventh out of the ten sectors as detailed in my Sector Rankings for ETFs and Mutual Funds report. It gets my Dangerous rating, which is based on aggregation of ratings of 11 ETFs and 15 mutual funds in the Materials sector as of July 16, 2014.

My top ETFs and mutual funds have high-quality holdings and low costs. As detailed in “Low-cost funds dupe investors”, there are few funds that have both good holdings and low costs.

Picking from the multitude of sector ETFs is a daunting task. In any given sector there may be as many as 45 different ETFs, and there are at least 181 ETFs across all sectors.

Across our 1,800 stock universe, utilities remains the best scoring sector. Idustrial goods also score above the average universe score this week. Also in today's report is a chart breaking out historical monthly returns for utilities over the past decade.
